Me and my husband visited Idukki Dam on 27th April' 2017. We made a sudden plan on weekend and started off from Bangalore. The distance between Bangalore to Munnar is around 500 kms. We had a comfortable over night bus journey of 9 to 10 hours to Munnar.
Idukki is 65 kms away from Munnar town. The complete road from Munnar to Idukki Dam through the Western Ghats mountain range is fully surrounded by rolling hills dotted with tree plantations which was established in the late 19th century.
In the heart of the Idukki district lies the Idukki Dam which is rarely explored and Asia's biggest arch dam constructed across the Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two mountains named Kuravanmala and Kurathimala.

The view of the dam from front and back sides are very beautiful. Visiting time of this dam is only on Saturday and Sunday between 10am to 5pm. Reaching there on Friday, we were not able to see from the top of the dam, then we found a road on map to reach the back side of the dam and upon reaching there our reactions were just wow! The Periyar river was surrounded by hills and the place was very peaceful. We had spent some time by sitting on the rocks and took some photos. After that we came back to our hotel on the same day. Next day we planned for Munnar local sight seeing and followed by a visit to Periyar National Park in Thekkady which is around 100 kms away from Munnar.
